Who Was Franz Schubert?
Franz Schubert was an Austrian composer born on January 31, 1797, in Vienna. He died at the young age of 31 on November 19, 1828, but left an enormous body of work that includes more than 600 lieder (German art songs), nine symphonies, liturgical music, chamber music, piano pieces, and operas. Schubert is often considered one of the leading figures in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era.
He is perhaps best known for his song cycles “Die Schne Mllerin” and “Winterreise,” which have become staples of the vocal repertoire. His “Unfinished Symphony” and Symphony No. 9 (“The Great”) are also frequently performed and admired. Schubert’s music is known for its lyricism, harmonic innovation, and emotional depth.
Although he achieved only limited recognition and financial success during his lifetime, Schubert’s work has since been widely performed and studied, earning him a place as one of the most important composers in the Western classical tradition.
